Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Sweaters

A Cozy Pillow Made from a Red SweaterWhen the time comes to say goodbye to your favorite old sweater, it may be heartbreaking to let go. But fortunately, even if you can’t wear your sweater again, you don’t have to give it up! Instead, try upcycling your sweater into something else with a fun do-it-yourself project. We’ve assembled some easy, creative ways to repurpose old sweaters into things you can use all winter long!

Cozy mittens. Generating a pair of warm winter mittens out of an old sweater is uncomplicated and fascinating! Just outline your hands in chalk around the bottom edge of a sweater, leaving the outline around 1/4 inch bigger than your hand. Moreover, cut out the pieces. Finally, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving the bottom edge open. Flip your new mittens right side out and enjoy!

Decorative pillow. Nothing says comfy like a sweater-covered decorative pillow for your Dane County home! To make a pillow out of an old sweater, just utilize a pillow for reference and cut the sweater to size. Later, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving enough room on one side to put the pillow inside. Then stitch the opening shut and add buttons or other decorative highlights.

Fingerless gloves. Another ideal way to repurpose an old sweater is to use it to craft fingerless gloves! Both trendy and functional, a pair of fingerless gloves can help you stay warm in freezing weather while permitting you to type or swipe on your phone. Think about cutting the sleeves off the sweater to any height you desire. Next, create a hole for your thumbs. That’s it! Cute fingerless gloves you can enjoy all season!

Boot toppers. Another styling option for upcycling an old sweater is to craft some pretty boot toppers. Boot toppers can help keep your legs warm and protect your legs from rough seams or zippers. To build boot toppers, simply cut the upper sleeve off an old sweater long enough to fit your calf and then fold the extra material over the top of your boot.

Headband. A headband is another inexpensive and stunning craft you can produce from an old sweater. You can create your headband as thin or as wide as you prefer or create more than one for more options. Begin by cutting a strip from the sweater in your selected width, then stitch the ends together to fit your head. Quick coziness and stylishness!

Pocket hand warmers. One helpful item you can take with you to stay warm in cold weather is a pocket hand warmer. To produce one out of a sweater, cut several squares from a sweater arm or band, turn inside out, and stitch up the sides. Cut a little opening and fill with dried beans, lentils, or pie weights. You may also incorporate buckwheat and dried lavender for a pleasant fragrance. After that, close the opening, heat in the microwave, and slide into a pocket for toasty warm fingers!

Smartphone case. The possibilities are that your personal tech gadgets don’t like being cold any more than you do! Protect them and repurpose an old sweater simultaneously by sewing a simple smartphone or tablet case. Trace your tech device with chalk on the sweater, then turn inside out and sew, leaving one edge open. Attach a button or other accessory for a gorgeous and functional result!

Sweater wreath. Upcycled sweaters can be stylish and functional when you make a fun sweater wreath for your house. Using a foam or other wreath form, cut and sew your old sweater around the form to create an elegant wreath. Put some stylish ribbon or other ornamental touches, and you will get a wreath you can enjoy all season long – and beyond!
